Summary
This paper analyzes Nick Gillespie’s article entitled, “Millennials are Selfish and Entitled, and Helicopter Parents are to Blame.” Generally, the report talks about how the adults resent the younger population's behavior due to their selfishness. Based on the Reason-Rupe Poll, among the 1,000 respondents, sixty-five percent of the adult American respondents believe that young adults, ages eighteen to twenty-nine, are selfish and entitled. Initially, the author explained that older adults are responsible for this behavior because they have followed the new upbringing trend that spoils the children, thereby allowing them to justify their unacceptable attitudes. However, towards the end, the author contradicted the traditional way of thinking by stating facts about the positive outcomes of this type of parenting (Gillespie).
Analysis
Nowadays, millennials often blame not being able to follow the “traditional” way of living. This may be due to several factors that are not recognized by the older population (Gillespie). One of the significant factors that are often neglected is the child’s upbringing, where the more aging population is the principal party accountable. In this article, Gillespie contradicted the definitive explanations and beliefs on helicopter parenting by supporting his statements with evidence.
Gillespie’s article is written to address the resentment of the older population toward the millennials. The explanations are mainly directed to indirect suggestions that condemn the more aging population's ways and emphasize that the negative perception toward the younger generation is entirely unacceptable. Gillespie’s purpose is to enlighten the minds of the older people to prevent following the ways that they used that resulted in the outcomes that they dislike, as evident in his statement, “…we’ve got no one to blame but ourselves — especially the moms and dads among us (Gillespie).” However, the author also emphasized the positive outcomes of the current parenting style.
The article clarified the ambiguities in the ideologies of most parents, thereby making Gillespie and exceptional writer.
