Literary Analysis on Madeline Ashby’s Company Town
Understanding the relationship between thematic elements in a story is essential for a greater appreciation of any work of art. It allows the reader to be able to understand the relationship between each element and the emotions that they are trying to convey to their readers. In this article, I would focus this analysis in Madeline Ashby’s novel entitled Company Town. Specifically, my main point of analysis would revolve around the different elements of fiction such as plots, characters, and settings, among others. This includes an insight about the author’s particular writing style that is apparent in the story. Nevertheless, upon reading the novel, I believe that Ashby’s piece closely resembles modern science-fiction stories based on its plot and her subtle yet frequent reference to popular culture.
Thematic Analysis
The main plot of the story revolves around the life of Go Jung-Hwa and the town called New Arcadia. Early in the story, the author has expressly revealed a significant number of details about what is happening in the town, including the role of Lynch corporation, the failing status of the town, the hardships of the people, and the inclusion of biotechnology in the story. Nevertheless, Hwa’s role in the story would fully become clear as the readers understand that one of the Lynch’s heir has been receiving several threats and that her personal circumstance is the key to protecting him. Although the author has clearly utilized a variety of techniques in shaping the plot’s timeline, it is also clear that a non-linear storline was mostly utilized. Although the story revolves around Hwa’s persona, the author tried to distinguish between Hwa’s bodyguard duties and his being a serial killer, which could cause confusion among the readers.
Nonetheless, the plot is also one of things that suggests the influence of contemporary writing styles on her work. Themes like bioengineering, post-apocalyptic communities, and hacking are undoubtedly allusions to recent types of storylines.
