The Death of a Sales Man review
The character Willy Loman is a traveling salesperson who sells his company’s products in different cities in the United States. The author, Arthur Miller, however, does not disclose the specific products that Willy sells, perhaps because his character represents every person who has been in this situation to ensure more audience connect and identify with the character. Willy is involved in a customer-based sales approach. He describes this form of sale throughout the play, where he depicts the prowess of sales as all about faking it until you achieve the desired outcome, look good, charm people and crack jokes so that people can like you. On numerous occasions, Willy describes experiences of his sales trips where for instance, he tells his wife that the trip was terrible because the people considered him unlikable. Further, to the end of the play, as he finally faces the truth about his failures. He discovers that people buy people, and if one were not real, people would not buy you, a realization that enlightens him of his poor job skills and lack of overall success.
Arthur, the author set the play in the 1940s New York City, where Willy Loman’s family lived in their Brooklyn family home. The New York at the time was before industrialization and adoption of changes such as the building of apartments.
