Reflection
The Great Divorce is a fictional work produced by C. S. Lewis and offers theological perspectives on different matters such as the existence of hell. Additionally, the book gives a philosophical perspective to illustrate his points. For example, the author has evaluated different Christian theology on different issues, such as entering heaven. The literature provides a summary of chapters one to eight of the book.
The story begins by describing the situation of the dingy city where people are waiting for a bus. This city is depicted as hell; it is dark, and the windowless warehouses make the town look empty. Additionally, at the bus stop, the narrator listens to the conversations of the people waiting for the bus; they appear discontented and dissatisfied. After the arrival of the bus, the driver seems illuminated; he drives with one hand while the other fan the steam resulting from the rain.
The driver’s behaviors annoy the people who wonder why he does not want to behave naturally (Lewis, p.2). The author also explains how people got into the bus in a chaotic manner, although the bus had enough for everyone, the narrator explains that they fought like hens while boarding the bus. The narrator sits next to a poet who describes how he tried surviving in this town by establishing a circle of intellectuals. The poet, however, stipulates that the people were not concerned about intellectual life and that they ignore his writings.
While in the bus, the narrator listens to the numerous complaints raised by the Tousle-Headed Poet, who explains that his parents did not understand him and that he studied in five universities and that none understood his talent. The poet also explains that human beings are endangered by capitalism. The quarrels in the bus escalated into a stampede where people fired pistols and used their knives (Lewis, p.3). The narrator is unharmed and sits next to another man who is older than the poet. When asked about the grey town, the older man explains that it has existed forever and that new people are always flown into the city.
