We have mentioned a few ideas regarding what this “grey town” might be. Hell? Purgatory? A stop on the road to their eternal destination? Discuss some of the descriptions the narrator gives us of the grey town as well as details other characters have supplied. Where do you think they are? Support your claim with Biblical evidence where possible. Include in your analysis Lewis’ warning at the end of the preface.
The narrator’s description is not entirely conclusive but there are hints he provides which help the reader to identify where they are. In one instance, the narrator says that “I had the sense of being in a larger place, perhaps even a larger sort of space, than I had ever known before: as if the sky were further off and the extent of the green plan wider that they could be on this little ball of earth. I had got out in some sense which the Solar System itself seem an indoor affair.” From the above, it appears that the narrator is not on earth and neither is he in heaven or hell. There was no clear sign of where he was and there was also a lot of uncertainty which comes out clearly in what he says next. “It gave me a feeling of freedom, but also of exposure, possibly of danger, which continued to accompany me through all that followed.” This shows that there was uncertainty on the part of the narrator because he/she did not know what to expect now that he was not on earth.
