Jill Johnstone’s article on Agnes Martin makes for an interesting narrative featuring various themes and equally unique perspectives on various aspects of life. The narrator’s encounters with the sage, Agnes Martin, engages the reader’s creative and critical thinking as one tries to understand the point of view for both characters. However, one identifies several themes as the story unfolds and thus creating an understanding of the author’s message to the audience from the text. Among the themes in the text include solitude, submission, and contentment. The narrator expresses Agnes Martin’s obsession with keeping to herself by admitting at first that despite being a famous artist, it was not easy to find the renowned sage as she enjoys her solitude. The author also highlights the theme of submission as Agnes lets fate take control of her life by going wherever it takes her. Agnes also appears to be content with her situation urging others to let go of life’s restrictions and inhibitions.
