Philosophy is a subject that entails thinking. The scope of one’s thoughts usually goes beyond society, the world and even the universe. In Exploring Philosophy by Steven M Cahn, the question of philosophy based on Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and Meaningless Lives has been comprehensively explored.
The Letter from Birmingham Jail is a piece of writing that championed the philosophy of non-violence. During this period, King established a good rapport with the clergymen who considered his actions violent (Augustine, 2017). He showed people, through his letter that he was unwilling to give up despite the pressure that he encountered. Cahn presents King as a character whose mentality goes beyond mere words. His thinking was different since he declined to take advantage of violence. His devotion towards Christianity and its values can be felt through his words in the letter.
