In chapters 3-5, we read about how Perkins' experiences as an economic hit man did not make his job any easier. If anything, he seemed to run into more and more doubts about whether his actions were ultimately justified. And yet, he did them anyway, for money, power, recognition from his peers. How is Indonesia and Jakarta symbolically representative of the so-called "Third World," as a whole? Its history is a sad story, but a fascinating one.
Obviously, Perkins' role in this saga that stretched by hundreds of years was not serving the interests of Indonesia populace as a whole. Perhaps that is why Chapter Five is called, "Selling my Soul."
How does Perkins' activities manipulating future power grids and massive construction projects serve the interests of the IMF, the World Bank, the CIA and the NSA? What is the "scam" in this scenario? I don't know about you, but I can recall hearing about "private contractors" being kidnapped by political organizations with interests that were opposed to that of the power structure mentioned above. Many of these events happened in Iraq and Afghanistan. At the time, I thought they were outrageous, and now I am not so sure. I don't condone them, obviously, but I now see that the world is much more complex than the news portrayed it.
How has your view of the world changed after reading Part One of Perkins' book?
Do you feel a sense of confusion and hopelessness or insight and optimism?
Now that you know a significant piece of the puzzle, does it make you want to know more? Or are you feeling overwhelmed by it all?
How can you channel this newfound knowledge in positive channels?

After reading many books about Indonesia, the author thought that it was a beautiful country, and that made him want to visit that place. In particular, Jakarta and Indonesia were representatives of “Third World” countries since they were trying to improve the lives of people by asking for help from developed nations. In other terms, their economies were struggling in one way or another.
By using the largest global corporations, such as the World Bank, National Security Agency (NSA), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the International Monetary Funds (IMF), the United States of America (USA) manipulates other countries to meet its self-centered objectives. Chapter four says, “So, as you develop this master plan, please do everything you can to make sure that the oil industry and all the others that serve it – ports, pi...
