Sociolinguistics is the descriptive study of the effects of one or multiple aspects of society, such as expectation, contexts, the ways a language is used, cultural norms, traditions and the effects of society on the native language. According to Robert J. Podesva, sociolinguistics has a close relationship with linguistic anthropology (Podesva 479). In some situations, it can easily overlap with pragmatics. In recent decades, the field of sociolinguistics has seen a growing interest in varying aspects of segmental variation.
Research Question
Are there some specific recording procedures and situations to be taken into account to illustrate the value of voice quality?
Methods and Results
In order to prove his viewpoint, Robert J. Podesva undertook a research project along with Heath. This white medical student was raised in Long Island and attended an East Coast institution. He was the subject of this study. Robert asked him to record his voice in a variety of settings, but only when he was feeling comfortable and relaxed.
Three different situations representing the student’s stylistic performances were selected for in-depth analysis, and the researcher was quick at providing Heath with a short description of the situation before his voice could be recorded and checked for quality.
