The drama “Shakuntala” by Kalidasa is an illustration of the beauty surrounding the different human emotions. In demonstrating these emotions, the author has extensively used rasa as a means to achieve this. In essence, rasa in Shakuntala has been used specifically to imitate life dramatically. Using rasa, both the pains and pleasures of life have been glorified to the outside audience as a way of provoking them to have a feel of what life is really about.
In Shakuntala, the provocation of rasa is through various acts and language. Considering that there are nine rasa in total, the drama has intentionally provoked nearly all of them. The nine include love, laughter, fury, compassion/tragedy, disgust, horror, heroic mood, wonder, and peace.
