Fighting Intolerance
Thanks to civilization, almost every region around the globe, if not all, experiences diversification. Diversification, in return, has enabled the establishment of noble ideas from great minds from various backgrounds. However, with the positive effects of diversification being felt, the establishment of tolerance society for all groupings of people remains a toll order. This is even after several governments across the world have tried to create unifying policies to promote diversity within society. The majority of the groups that remain vulnerable to intolerance within the community are the minority ones, including people of color, gays, and lesbians, among other minority groups. This paper shall, therefore, highlight the appropriate and inappropriate ways of fighting intolerance among social minority groups within the society.
Ways of Fighting Intolerance on Vulnerable Social Groups
               One of the ways to ensure that all categories of individuals are tolerated in the community is through promotion and acknowledging the existence of diverse cultures in society. This way, individuals get to understand various lifestyles of their colleagues accept and respect them even if they do not subscribe to them. This form of fighting intolerance among the vulnerable groups is useful since it does not give a leeway for superior groupings to look down on the others. This is because accepting and acknowledging different diversity of respect becomes a mutual stand for all people. However, when this is not done, one group might not understand and realize the existence of other groups, especially the minority ones. This is likely result in a situation where one group dominate over the others just as Appiah put it that;
“The ‘whites’ invented the Negroes to dominate them,” (Appiah, 114)
           Ronson, on the other hand, also tends to differ with the policy made by the Singaporean government, where individual rights are revoked for the good of the group (Ronson, 1). This is because this model exposes some unfairness. For instance, an individual who comes from the minor group is likely to be obligated to conform to the cultural practices of the dominant group since it pleases the majority of people in society. This is a clear indication that even if an individual does something right according to his opinion and wrong in the larger picture of the community, then the person becomes intolerable in the society. This way, intolerance is not being fought; instead, it is only shifted from one group to the other. This argument, therefore, conforms with Appiah’s argument hence suggesting that the Singaporean government policy to fight intolerance is not that effective. It is consequently convincible to argue that the best way to make the Singapore policy appropriate in its course is through assessing the decree of individual rights against society. When personal rights are more valuable, it should be prioritized over the group.
               The other inappropriate way through which governments have tried to fight intolerance toward...
