Facebook has been a source of information, entertainment, and deception. Facebook is a platform that allows anyone to post and share whatever they want freely. It contains various information, but not all are reliable (Guess et al. 1). Because of their persuasion style, some posts cause confusion and deception. It is critical in communication to sound persuasive to persuade the audience to believe what is being said. Aristotle’s Rhetoric must be used to convince people and distinguish between truth and lies successfully. Ethos, logos, and pathos are rhetorical appeals. These appeals must be combined and utilized equally to improve outcomes (Grant 83). In a nutshell, it is critical to scrutinize posts to determine what is legitimate and what is not, and the rhetorical appeals may be helpful.
Michael Conniff shared a COVID-19 status update on Facebook on March 10, 2020. Conniff is raising public awareness by sharing information about the effects, cures, and precautions (Michael Conniff). He is disseminating information to keep people from becoming infected with the virus. Facebook is used to inform his virtual friends, who could include relatives, colleagues, and peers. In addition, he chooses a topic that everyone can understand and relate to.
Rhetoric appeals will be used to identify if Conniff’s post is persuasive and legitimate. The first appeal is ethos. Ethos refers to the author’s credibility and reliability. Ethos is a tool to gain the audience’s trust (Grant 82). Conniff mentions in his post that the information he shares came from a friend who works in a hospital and Japanese doctors (Michael Conniff). It implies that the people he mentioned can be trusted because they work in the medical field. As a result, people may believe Conniff and be persuaded by him.
