Environment as the Major Contributory Factor in Promoting Gender Inequality

For the past decade, many women have been recognized for their significant contributions in various sectors. For them to reach where they are, women are often subjected to gender discrimination. Azar Nafisi book Reading Lolita in Tehran is an example of persistent gender inequality witnessed in many parts of the world. The book reveals the cruel treatment women face in revolutionary Iran. Azar presents several examples depicting the dominant role of the government and the society in general in enhancing gender inequality (Nafisi 291). Although gender inequality is a long time issue that is analyzed from different perspectives, environment is a major contributory factor in promoting gender inequality.
These similar sentiments have been expressed by Malcolm Gladwell in his book The Power of Context. In his book, he reviews how the relation between ideas, behavior and the society in general. Gladwell states that our environment has an impact on our unconscious decisions and our behavior (Gladwell 157) that are not well-explored. Gladwell notes that people tend to overestimate the deep-seated character traits, but underestimate the important role of the human environment and the context (Gladwel148).
Gladwell’s opinion of overestimating character traits is supported by scholars who argue that biological considerations have some relationship with the current gender inequality because the only consistent differences between men and women are biological. Biological factors alone cannot contribute to the existing gender inequality, especially in the modern world where physical strength does not equate success.
