Personal Statement: Gender and empowerment of girls and women through sports
Sports play a critical role in the development of values and those critical skills such as leadership, teamwork, negotiation and overall communication skills in the community. For a long time, there have been campaigns to empower the girl child to enhance their full participation in those activities which affects them and others. Through sports, women and girls will get a fair chance to participate in socially productive activities outside the confines of their homes. It is common knowledge that boys have had more chances to interact with the rest through such activities. This should be the same with the girls and women.
Girls and women will get a chance to network, develop their confidence, identity and boost their self esteem. Through sports, women will not only benefit health wise physically, they are set to benefit psychologically too through the concept of positive embodiment. Women will have a chance to do something for themselves, such as observing personal fitness that will benefit them in terms of vitality and avoidance of common diseases related to lack of practice. This will enable families to save on the medical budget. This is so because they will create personal time that will be used for interaction amongst themselves, hence boosting their knowledgeability on a host of issues affecting them.
