Did you know that drugs have the ability to reach the brain and modify its normal functioning and have long-term harmful effects on the body?. The risk of physical, social harm as well as long term dependence damage from both legal and illegal drugs or substances makes them some of the most damaging substances to humans.There is no such thing as a good drug, but some are more addictive than others. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) (2) there were approximately 21.5 million people from age 12 who had a substance use disorder (SUD) in 2014. The Opioid Overdose Crisis has received much attention in public discourse in the recent past as drug overdoses are now one of the leading causes of preventable deaths (Wegman e200). Drug use has an effect on health, behavior is linked to increased risk of violence, and put the addict's life at risk
Drugs are linked to harmful and worsening consequences for the physical and mental health of the users including changes in behavior.
There is risk of damage to the respiratory system, cardiovascular damage, and other physical functions and especially for the most potent drugs sometimes even leading to death.
Psychological damage including memory disorders, con psychomotor disorders, the performance of complex task, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, psychosis, and panic attacks.
There are also co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, which increase the risk of worsening health outcomes
Addiction is life-long disease, characterized by behaviors linked to using addictive substance and its compulsive use that lead to negative consequences.
Neuroimaging studies have highlighted that drugs addiction result in neurochemical and functional changes, which may explain changes in behavior.
