Masculinity has always been seen as some sort of a defining point for men. It is the social barometer for men that sets down the rules and sanctions anyone who dares to deviate from it, even at the expense of their health and well-being. In the article written by Kimmel (2008), entitled 'Bros Before Hos': The Guy Code, he discussed the origins, causes, and the effects as to why the men have always maintained and strived to be a “man among men”. Despite his extensive discussion of these reasons, he believed that one of the reasons for this is manhood’s inherent sense of looking upon himself greatly and his desire to maintain this image via the socially embedded norms of masculinity. 
The Privilege of Being a Man
           First, Kimmel (2008) states an interview where he noted how men and women define perceives their gender relative to their capacities and liberty. On the one hand, women these days feel empowered as they believe that being a woman means being able to be free to do anything that they want. On the other hand, however, he also noted that men see their gender as being both a privilege and a duty. Specifically, men see their gender as a privilege of being ‘better’ or ‘higher’ than other sexes, with a corresponding duty to abide by the rules in every step that they take. 
           Accordingly, the author then states the “four basic rules of masculinity”, which involves (1) maintaining a masculine attitude all the time, (2) giving utmost emphasis on success, status, and material wealth, (3) capacity to be tough at times of crisis, and (4) exuding an aggressive character towards others.
