Visual Analysis of Dancing Girl
The artwork, “Dancing Girl” is a painting and a masterpiece of the Zand period. The painting was made by Muhammad Baqir, a renowned Persian artist who is popular as one of the superlative artists of his time. Looking at the painting, you can see a white girl in a natural position, appearing to be dancing. She appears to be in the hallway standing in front of a tray of fruits, wearing a long dress of many colors. She has sleepy eyes, rose-bud lips, has her right hand lifted across her bent head whereas her left hand is holding one sleeve of her dress. My first impression from looking at the painting is that the girls is from a royal family because of the expensive clothes, the crown on her head and the white necklace around her neck. The artwork did not particularly spark any emotions in me because of the perspective that I viewed the painting as just an entertainment and excitement depiction.
“Dancing Girl” is a complex art that covers all the visual elements and principles of design. The artist uses a three dimensional axial line with an implied expression by the edge of the form of the art to outline the general diagrammatic being in both vertical and horizontal lines manner. The lines are smooth, organic and maintain a constant thickness throughout the artwork to show the descriptive and analytical nature of the artists and his objective in the creation of the painting. Secondly, the shape of the artwork is organic. The artist has used the shape in a descriptive way to show the outline of the sculpture and how he creates the carving of the head of the girl, her legs, hands and body. There is a detailed and strong expressive power in the manner in which the artist has combined the use of the red clothes or paint in her hands and the necklace to match the shape of the painting.
The artist has used negative space within the composition of the piece of work to create opening spaces when he includes an empty opening to the background of the image between the hand and the hip where it rests upon. Also, intuitive perspective has been used in the painting because evidentially, the object has been placed at a common angle to the picture plane but the linear elements, discussed in the previous segment, do not converge at any point. The artist has employed this technique to create his suggested depth of the piece of art and create an illusion of the same without any features of coherence. Furthermore, in terms of color, the hue of the painting contains a number of colors. The most recognizable color is the red color of the girl’s dress with white patches and the blue bottom with dark brown spots. The background of the image in the painting is both blue, brown and colorful as in the bowl containing the fruits and on the carpet where she is standing on. The artist has mixed the colors so as to achieve the warm temperature or psychological feeling of the painting. However, the combination of the colors with an addition of white and blue brings out the relative coolness and harmony between colors and the theme of royalty as shown in the piece.
In addition to the color of the piece of art, the artist maintains the independence of the red and blue expressions in the painting. The artist has also included
