Critical Thinking: Crucial Skill For Literate 21st Century Individuals

Essay Instructions:

Please answer one (1) of the following four (4) essay prompts with a five (5)-paragraph essay in the textbox that's provided, or alternatively, you may compose your essay in a word-processing program and submit it as a DOCX or ODT file. If you haven't written a five (5)-paragraph essay in some time, make certain to review the supplementary resources listed under "Week 16" for guidance.
In addition to writing a well-organized response, please be certain that your essay includes all three (3) of the following elements:
Use textual evidence from the sources that you select to help you to answer the essay prompt that you choose. This evidence should be incorporated into your essay's supporting paragraphs. While direct quotations can be used sparingly, most supporting content should be paraphrased.
Direct evidence from all outside sources that you discuss in your essay should be accompanied by in-text (parenthetical) citations, which must be formatted in MLA style [Example: (Smith 43)].
For each source that you discuss in your essay, be sure to include an MLA end-citation entry in an alphabetical list entitled "Works Cited." This list should be separate from the body of your essay.
Here are the four (4) prompts for this essay exam (remember, select just one to answer):
1. The ability to think critically appears to be a necessary, crucial skill for literate, educated 21st-century individuals to possess. How can educational systems do a better job of encouraging the development of critical-thinking skills in students? Within your five-paragraph essay, please reference and cite (in MLA style) at least three (3) sources from your textbook or elsewhere.
2. Select two (2) or more of the readings from this semester and respond to the following questions with a five-paragraph essay: What are some effective ways to integrate critical and creative thought into daily life? Can these two (2) types of thinking truly coexist with one another? Please include proper MLA citation entries.
3. How does Lars Eighner, as described in his essay, "On Dumpster Diving," utilize critical-thinking skills to navigate life as a dumpster diver? Where do the details of his account converge with some of the ideas expressed in Plato's "The Allegory of the Cave"? Be specific and detailed with your response. Using MLA documentation style, cite at least two (2) sources in your essay.
4. Are human beings in danger of becoming, as Nicholas Carr puts it, "pancake people"? What can be done to avoid, or mitigate, some of problems that "information-technology-gone-wild" has introduced, or will introduce, into our societies? Utilizing MLA style, please reference and cite at least three (3) sources from your textbook or elsewhere.
As you prepare your essay for submission, please remember the following characteristics of MLA-style documents:
1. The entire document should be double-spaced, and it should be presented in a readable 12-point font.
2. Instead of a cover page, please use a four-line heading at the top left-hand side of the first page:

3. Following the heading, you should have a title for your essay. Simply center the title, and then proceed with the body of your essay. You do not need to skip a line of text following the title.
4. Your page numbers should appear in the top right-hand corners of all pages. With each number, include your last name (e.g., "Couch 2"). If you elect to use the Moodle textbox for this exam, page numbers are unnecessary.
5. Second and subsequent lines in each end-citation entry should be indented 1/2 inch.

Introduction
The 21st century has brought about a complex environment where one can barely excel or survive without critical thinking. Critical thinking which is defined as the ability to think rationally and critically is important in order to navigate and understand the complex issues in the current society. ideally, purposeful thinking ought to be core aspect in today’s learning. Critical thinking among literate individuals opens up opportunities by allowing them clarify concepts, evaluate knowledge, seek new alternatives and possibilities. In a world polluted with excessive information majority of which are false, critical thinking is needed to think broadly and identify a right path that can help solve challenges and issues beyond the school setting. Critical thinking is not however developed overnight but follows a process. Schools must create environments that flex learners critical thinking abilities in formative years.
Development Of Critical-Thinking Skills In Students
Critical thinking is a skill that must not be ignored in the learning environment. Critical thinking can be developed and advanced by educational systems in many ways. First, school should encourage project-based learning. Exposing learners to real world problems equips them with skills to navigate through the complex issues at an early stage. Secondly, schools can promote critical thinking by promoting collaboration not only among students but also among staff and the community as a whole. Thirdly, encourage different views and offer opportunities for brainstorming (Sierok et al., 4). Schools can further inspire creativity by encouraging autonomy, re-wording assignment to enhance creativity, and help students know when its important to utilize creative thinking.
