The Controversy of Rock and Roll Music
Rock “n” roll has been one of the critical aspects with vast influence on the culture and American society. The masses realized the impact of rock “n” roll during the 1950s after it emerged as a dividing and uniting force. Although rock and roll were popular during the 1950s, the fear of race mixing made it controversial. Rock “n” roll influenced an erosion of prejudices towards African Americans as a minority group in the United States. However, parents disliked the influence and message of rock “n” roll and the sexuality of performers. Besides, they disregarded the fact that the music was from African Americans despite its recording by a white performer. Therefore, the 20th century marked a significant advancement in human history, with music contributing a factor. According to Nygaard, the emergence of new music genres, such as rock “n” roll, significantly impacted society, such as improving racial boundaries and addressing segregation against minority groups.
The rock “n” roll was the first music genre that had much influence from African-American styles. The genre in the Southern United States takes elements from swing, jazz, and blues as typical African American genres. Notably, rock “n” roll is an African American invention involving many contributions of musicians from minority groups. Later, white musicians co-opted the genre, making it a white phenomenon. Sanchez argues that African American roots of rockabilly music and its evolution to Rock “n” roll played a significant role in its widespread popularity (54). The 1950s facilitated the widespread popularity of rock “n” roll music, with the whites understanding its African American roots. While all races occupied major cities, blacks and whites lived in the same environment, which marked racial mixing in the United States.
A moral panic related to the first wave of rock “n” roll was fear of race mixing in that white, and black kids would intermingle over the music with sensuous and rhythmic beats. Suburban parents freaked out of their children hanging out while listening to sexualized music. White parents feared their children listening to music and getting engraved to black cultural practices. For them, the key focus was to promote segregation as a way of life. However, the main focus of the music genre was to promote race mixing and address segregation. Elvis Presley was an icon of rock “n” roll music while the fear of the genre brewed from a transgressive collision of Afro-American rhythm during the fraught racial politics in the 1950s. The fear of the music genre was apparent when it became a hit across the United States and other parts of the world. The emergence of white musicians, such as Elvis Presley, influenced rock “n” roll to be a hit among white teenagers.
Elvis Presley became an icon in the rock “n” roll genre, and while most people embraced it, others disregarded its role. In such a case, the United States had varying viewpoints. While some considered the music genre a threat to American National...
