Comparison/Contrast Essay Paper
Length: 4-5 typed pages—not including the Works Cited page.
(10 point penalty for less than 4 pages)
Format: MLA 8th edition: Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, page number header, name list, centered title, paragraphs indented, three in-text citations and a Works Cited.
Research: NCLIVE peer-reviewed article cited in paper and listed on Works Cited
Purpose:
To inform by comparing and contrasting points of two articles.
To understand and apply the key principles of essay organization and development.
To apply the rules of Standard Written English.
Audience: Academic. Formal tone. No contractions. No first or second person pronouns.
Compare/Contrast: Organizational Pattern
Introduction (10+ sentences):
What, generally, are the subjects and what are the author’s attitude towards the subject? This is where a brief summary of a few sentences of each article is appropriate. State the thesis at the end of the introduction paragraph including both authors and article titles (in quotation marks, not italics).
Body (10-15+ sentences in six body paragraphs):
First, decide points and how to present. Organize ideas in a clear structure
(All comparison, then all contrasts OR compare and contrast each point).
Determine a strategy for dividing the information into three or more parts. Devote a paragraph to each major division and provide a topic sentence at the start of each paragraph.
Possibilities:
Discuss all comparisons, then discuss all contrasts.
Or alternate compare and contrast point 1, then compare and contrast point 2, then compare and contrast point 3.
There should be six body paragraphs.
Each topic sentence must state how the two articles are alike or different.
Sample topic sentences:

Contrast: The two articles have these similarities, but they also . . .
Comparison: Both Simon and Beck agree . . .

Provide transitions between body paragraphs, and between important ideas within the paragraphs as you summarize.
Use comparison transition words such as like, same, similar, both, and just as.
Use contrast transitions words such as but, however, on the other hand, yet, in contrast, and despite.
Important: Provide three in-context citations from the two articles and one NCLIVE article and a Works Cited with the four citations.
Conclusion (7+ sentences):
Do not restate the thesis—but offer an opinion. (No I me my mine you your)

“Piracy Gave Me a Future” vs. "That Time The Internet Sent A SWAT Team To My Mom's House"
The global maritime industry is threatened by criminal elements such as privacy and terrorism; although both types of crimes bring security concerns, they come from different reasons. In ''' Piracy Gave Me a Future", the writer's crime results from poverty and a means to survive. "That time the internet sent a SWAT team to my mother's house" emanates from a gaming point of view where the authors are a little skeptical and want to have fun. This paper's main aim is to compare and contrast the two articles: “Piracy Gave Me a Future" by Daniel Starkey, which dwells in piracy, and "That Time The Internet Sent A SWAT Team To My Mother's House” by Caroline Sinder that talks about harassment. It will be divided into six body parts where the comparisons will first be satisfied, then the contrasts reviewed.
Comparisons
The two articles "piracy gave me a future" and "That time the internet sent a SWAT to my mother's house” slide-in agreement that crime is illegal, irrespective of the reasons behind it, crime is a crime and legal action needs to be taken against it. In Daniel's article, he is cautious of his actions; deep down, he is aware that what he does is wrong, but he does not know what to do? He says
"As a kid, I stole from everyone
An unattended purse in a restaurant. Easy 5$. Pokйmon cards at target? Pocketed. I even marked my best friends, waking early in days I'd sleepover to riffle through their house and see what I could nab in.
I need this, I'd tell myself.
For a time, that thin justification worked"
From the above statement, we see Daniel's dilemmas. He is torn between right and wrong. The word 'thin justification' obviously enough to tell us the level at which he tried to wash his conscience clean. Caroline also shares these views and sentiments in her article, "I felt my face go very, very flush and I felt my chest go very tight; everything seemed to get very, very heavy.
Both Daniel and Caroline aim to depict a set of moral values and standards. Literature is a mirror for society. They use their articles to illuminate this aspect, aiming to create a specific change in their reader's minds. Morals, being a set of standards of conduct required by society, set these standards in media (Baek, Hyunin, et al. P 298) Caroline, for example, says, "I started tweeting using the hashtag #g00bergate instead of #gartmate - this way, I could still voice my opinion" 9 (Caroline).
From the text, we see her need to voice her opinion on the gamers' crimes after being done to her mother. She is neither for swatting or the famous doxing, and somehow the readers feel the need she is echoing on conducts expected in the online world. Daniel also reflects such morals through warning" It is also the game where the actions had serious consequences, and taking the quick, easy path could severe enormous harm to innocent bystanders." His caution can be felt as he tries to bring the take one step at a time home.
Daniel and Caroline both discuss the start point of the crime committed by netizens. They bring forth an understanding home of the various forms of crookedness in the gamers'...
