Answer: Carolina was a perfect example of a prophet honored by everyone but rejected in their hometown. She gained popularity abroad due to her Brazilian bestselling book, "Quarto de despejo," which discussed the Brazilian poor's daily sufferings and the deep-rooted racism towards Blacks in the country, reflecting her upbringing. Her abroad validation was evidenced in her good receptions during her visits to Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, the U.S., France, Germany, Russia, and once while addressing an international conference attended by Nobel Prize Winners Frank Tannenbaum, Carlos Fuentes, and Alejo Carpentier.
However, back home, she faced the worst hatred from all quarters that her abroad success tours were not reported in Brazilian media. Carolina faced hostility because she did not spare any ills frequently orchestrated in her country and was considered an outcast. Growing up black, poor, and raised by a single mother, society did not expect her to talk freely in the media with the "Brazilian intellectuals" as she did. The Brazilian female journalists and intellectuals hated her because they deemed her to go against the societal set doctrines. She did not spare the poor from slums (favelas) also, as she slammed them for being lazy and responsible for their misfortunes. The leftist political class equally hated her, considering her selfish and after personal gains rather than revolutionary for a common change. At one time, she was quoted to validate the then military dictatorial regime and considered by the poor blacks as an outcast since she leaned towards the whites and even preferred dating them.
