Veteran's Issues
Veterans face a range of issues that emerge from their work experience, the society, and how the government treats them. After leaving the military, the challenges the veterans face also affects their family members, and returning to civilian life can be a difficult battle. Kemp reviews that the suicide rate among the male and female veterans has increased significantly compared to the general population (3). These sentiments highlight that the challenges faced by veterans are on the rise and there is lack of sufficient effectiveness in handling the issues they face. According to SAMHSA, the veterans comprise 20% of the national suicide records. Additionally, three out of five veterans that committed suicide had been diagnosed with a mental health condition. Suicide and mental health challenges are some of the key issues that are triggered by other challenges faced by the veterans.
In their adjustment to civilian life, the veterans face challenges in understanding and abiding by the civil law standards that are different from the provisions that guide them in the military. Such issues prevent progressive and positive readjustment for them to have a successful future. Nevertheless, the complex challenges depend on the individual and if the veteran benefits from the constructive support systems that exist across the country (NDVets). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the mental health issues that has had a significant effect on the veterans. The psychological pain faced by the veterans goes beyond the effects of suffering the trauma of wars. In this light, there is an effect on the sense of identity, purpose, and self-worth (NDVets). As they enter the new civilian life, the veterans reassess their life goals and abilities, including setting and accomplishing the personal and professional goal. The loss of ranks and the respect that comes with it makes it more difficult for them to start over in the society. The psychological impact of the traumatic experiences in the military can inhibit all these personal and professional growth strategies. PSTD, depression, and substance abuse make it difficult for veterans to engage in constructive activities for themselves and the community. Another issue that presents significant challenges is the physical handicap that results in form of injuries sustained in a milit...
