Essay Instructions:

Rhetorical Analysis of a Speech
Formatting:
MLA heading and page numbers
2 double-spaced pages
1-inch margins
12 pt. Times New Roman or Arial font
MLA works cited page for the speech
Prompt:
You need to watch the video and read the transcript of President Reagan’s speech on the Challenger explosion in 1986. Write a rhetorical analysis on the speech, based on the readings and notes for this unit.
Essay Breakdown:
Introduction—
Give important background information.
Subject: What is the broad topic of the message?
Speaker: Who is sending the message?
Occasion: What is the speaker responding to?
Audience: Who is the speaker targeting?
Purpose: What is the speaker’s desired outcome?
Body Paragraphs (Analysis)—
Focus on HOW the speaker achieves his/her purpose.
Work chronologically.
Use strong verbs that give specific information (see separate list).
Use specific descriptions and/or quotes to identify each part of your analysis.
Clearly communicate what the speaker’s rhetorical strategies are and what the effect is on the reader.
Conclusion (Significance)—
Do NOT restate your introduction!!!!!
Take this opportunity to explain why the message matters. If you can’t think of a reason why the advertisement matters, you didn’t pay attention.
Also discuss the overall effectiveness.
A significant part of your grade will come from your ability to analyze rather than summarize. This is sometimes a difficult thing for students to do. A good resource for planning and working your way through this assignment is "The Ultimate Cheatsheet for Critical Thinking" I gave you a couple of weeks ago. Go through that list of questions and see which ones, when answered, would apply best to this assignment. Don't focus on what was said as much as why it was said and how it affects the audience.

Transcript of President Reagan’s Speech on the Challenger Explosion in 1986
The Challenger Explosion of 1986 is one of the U.S.’s fatal incidents to ever hit the country’s space program. However, instead of delivering a president-like (these are often riddled with formal words and often shows the distance between a president and reality) speech, he makes use of a lot of cues that help send a strong message to the American people. His speech was for both the families of the departed as well as the American people. For him to give such a moving speech meant that he wanted to put his position as the head of the country aside, and be a normal American citizen. Several things helped President Reagan to achieve the above and these include his position, his insistence on using the personal pronoun ‘we’ in the speech, and the fact that he mentioned the names of the departed.
Being a president of the world’s largest economy and the world’s only hegemony is something big. However, while watching the video and reading the transcript of his speech, one cannot feel his presence. One feels the emotion in his voice, his vulnerability, and it is also easy to get in touch with his humane side. When people in a great country like the U.S. are able to see their president shaken and concerned as much as Reagan was, it becomes easier for them to connect with him as a person and not his position. So, this helped to show to the American people that he cares for...
