Shawnee Tribe
The indigenous people of the United States of America (USA) are called Native Americans. One such tribe is the Shawnee. Initially, members of this tribe settled in West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, and Ohio. In the 1660s, Shawnee people were displaced by the Iroquois, and they scattered in different directions, namely eastern Pennsylvania, South Carolina, southern Illinois, and Tennessee. Some of the Shawnee people moved to Missouri and Kansas before they ultimately settled in Oklahoma. The paper focuses on the history, culture, myths, beliefs, and morals of the tribe of Shawnee.
The estimate of Shawnee population in 1700 was about 3,000 people. In 1825, members of this population in Ohio were 800, 1,400 in Missouri, and 110 in Louisiana. The three primary federally recognized groups are Shawnee, Eastern Shawnee, and Absentee Shawnee tribes. The main homeland for the Shawnee tribe was along Ohio River Valley. The region had prairies and woods, which enabled it to be an ideal place for setting villages and hunting grounds. The primary language spoken by members of the Shawnee tribe is Algonquin. The dialect of this people is closely related to Sauk, Kickapoo, Mascouten, and Fox (Sultzman). During summers, Shawnee resides in houses made of barks. Women carry out the role of cultivating corns and vegetables as men go out fishing and hunting. Each Shawnee village has a big house where members gather for ritual purifications and religious sacrifices. Some of the significant ceremonies held by Shawnee individuals include the green corn, autumn bread, and spring bread dances. The Shawnee tribe has hereditary chiefs and patrilineal clans. Only highly-skilled, brave, and experienced men are chosen to be war chiefs.
