Technology as a Necessary Evil
The year is 2099 and I have just graduated with Master’s degree in computer science. I am excited to be among the team that has successfully developed a program that helps reduce e-waste in the environment. Unlike in the past generations that did not care about e-waste, the current society is concerned about environmental conservation. I enjoy walking or cycling along the expansive paths in the city, as I enjoy the fresh air. At home, I have a small garden where I organically farm my food. If only we could have a people that valued the environment.
The evolution of technology in the modern world has had positive and negative impacts on the society. It is among the major factors linked to globalization and the resultant economic development. In Globalization, Jerskey argues that technology has the potential to improve people’s lives in the present, but it can potentially create challenges in future if it remains uncontrolled. Technology also makes life easy; it simplifies complex processes and can enhance organizations’ productivity. In the medical world, technology can enhance the quality of life for people in the society. In Brave New World, technology is depicted as a tool that improves the productivity of people. Medical technology is used to develop people in different classes, such as leaders and manual laborers.
However, technology is also a major challenge in the society. Over-reliance on technology in production has rendered people jobless as robots replace human labor. Medical technologies such as gene therapy have raised ethical concerns about the society’s attitude towards the disabled. Technology has also enhanced companies’ production capacity; the overproduction is associated with increased environmental pollution. The severity of environmental pollution that emanate from technological advancement outweighs the benefits. Nevertheless, technology is still necessary in the modern world, but there is a need to control its impact on the environment. Government agencies have a significant role to play in the formulation of measures that can enhance environmental conservation amid technological advancement. Strict enforcement of environmental regulations, environmental risk assessment, and increased public awareness about environmental conservation are some of the policies that can mitigate the adverse effects of technology on environment.

The government can mitigate the adverse effects of pollution by implementing strict rules for environmental conservation. According to Jerskey, globalization has had an adverse impact on the environment, creating the need to develop regulations that address the issue. Despite having environmental regulations, countries still experience an inflow of waste. Environmental pollution continues to affect people. Jerskey is more concerned about the use of technology in industries. She says, “…as globalization expands, so is the demand for products and this enhances production.” (89).
