He asking to have a THEME My instructor wants me to start with an open sentence. I have always done what my family has ask me to do in terms of education. My parents always pushing to be in the medical field. I was born and raised in San Francisco. Growing up in San Francisco has not been easy for me. I’ve always felt like I need to probe my self to other because of race. Having Mexican origins but currently living in America, I can say that I have experienced the ups and downs of two totally contrasting worlds. I have also managed to learn how to juggle between the two identities quite efficiently, even though I must confess that it’s not an easy task. There is virtually everything at stake when it comes to the delicate balance between the two identities, as one might be under extreme temptation to cover one identity in favor of the other. AUTOBIOGRAPHY
I am grateful for what I have achieved today. My childhood was full of challenges which could have hindered me from pursuing my dreams. I was born and raised in San Francisco. My parents are Mexican and migrated to the city just before I was born. Because of my Mexican origin, I faced a lot of challenges growing up. Discrimination was the order of the day in the neighborhood. I could not play with the other children because I looked different. The stereotypes about Mexicans that they are not bright enough made me think that I will never be successful in life. Other kids would openly tell me that no matter how much I work hard in school I will end up working in the kitchen or become a custodian. Such sentiments used to discourage me as a child and caused me regret being a Mexican American. I would juggle between the two identities that were so demanding. On one hand, my parents are Mexican, but I was born in America. The two extremes used to compete and at some points I would feel that I should embrace one and leave the other. I could not entirely identify with students who emigrated from Mexico because I was born in the U.S. On the other hand, I would feel that I did not fully qualify to be an American. However, despite all the challenges, I accepted myself as a Mexican American, and this has helped me to advance in life rather than live in denial.
The bad experience I went through in school motivated me to pursue liberal studies. Most of the teachers openly expressed that those of us with Mexican origin would not succeed in life. The teachers would make us understand that because of the low income of our parents we would have problems after high school. For example, one teacher told us that Mexican Americans are intellectually inferior and therefore after school they can only secure the low income jobs. As a result, I decided to pursue a course that will help me address the challenges that I faced. I choose a major in Liberal Studies because it is interdisciplinary which allows one to integrate concepts from the natural and social sciences, humanities and arts. The course allows the learner to develop critical thinking skills and helps one to have a comprehensive background in the academic world. Additionally, Liberal Studies are essential in providing a person with skills that make one to become culturally sensitive and creative. The course fitted well with my ambitions since I realized that I needed to be intellectually independent as well as well rounded. I needed to challenge the norm and prove that Mexican Americans can be intellectually independent and pursue a course that is so diverse.
Since childhood, I have been interested in English Language and Literature. I have been reading widely and spending a lot of time learning the English language. I took a lot of time to s...
