• Using the case you selected for your course project, analyze the impact of diversity issues on career counseling. Review the Diversity Issues in Career Counseling Scoring Guide to understand the grading criteria for this assignment. In your paper:
• Analyze how gender, age, culture, SES, or other characteristics may influence your relationship with the client. You need to select a minimum of three characteristics or diversity issues.
• State how biases and assumptions can impact the career counseling process both from your perspective as the counselor and from the perspective of the client.
• Articulate the developmental models you will use to address these potential challenges with positive outcomes. For example, you can identify gender, life cycle, identity, or racial identity development models.
Your assignment should be 2–3 pages in length and include at least the Arthur and McMahon's reference.

Case Study Scenario:
• Alex
Alex, 44, is a biracial male, married with two children (ages 2 and 4). His mother is Caucasian and his father is African American. His mother stayed at home to raise him and his three siblings. His father, the first African American to earn his doctorate degree in Linguistics, was a professor at a small-town college and made a modest income.
He is well educated with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. He values work but also enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He grew up traveling and hopes to be able to continue that lifestyle.
He has a history of working in construction, building small log cabins, churches, and eventually private vacation homes. He also gained a great deal of experience working as a project manager for city construction. This included the management of multi-million dollar bonded projects such as building new schools and fire stations. He has had experience working for himself, successfully, as well as working with government agencies.
Being dissatisfied with the city he lived in, he and his family moved to another state, thinking he would be able to quickly find work. However, the slow economy has affected the building industry and he has only found limited work for the past two years. He has been working on various small remodeling projects but has not made enough connections to establish himself as well as he was in Massachusetts, his home state. Going back does not seem to be an option due to the costs of moving, and the economy is just as slow in his home town. Plus, he and the rest of the family were not happy living there as they were dissatisfied with the public school system.
The stress has been absorbed by him and his family. His wife believes he will find a good job but is not sure what direction to point him in. She has a stable job as a manager at a national grocery chain, and they have limited family support in there new state, North Carolina. She suggested he see a career counselor as she has insurance through her employer.
He is responsible and articulate. He enjoys autonomy and has a good sense of humor and looks forward to gaining some career counseling.

Considering that individuals are social beings, the environment that people learn and live in have immense impact on the aspect of career development. The opportunities that individuals are accorded, resources that are available at their own disposal and the social frameworks that define the manner in which people live and cohabit contribute to their awareness and sense of self in establishing their knowledge on carrier options. This clearly establishes the need to consider the societal and personal factors in order to establish the manner in which diversity issues play a significant role in career counseling, an aspect that points to the intent of this paper.
Analysis of the Impact of Diversity Issues on Career Counseling
According to studies, the recent approaches aimed at conceptualizing career counseling and theories models are only focused on particular variables that include ethnicity, gender, cultural values, and socioeconomic factors. Career counselors need to establish the manner in which culture plays an integral role in career development approaches (Arthur & McMahon's, 2005). In consideration of the advent of the multicultural competency, counselors are now focused on developing multicultural skills and awareness when engaging in career counseling.
Arthur & McMahon's (2005), establishes that the system approach of diversity has failed in receiving attention since individuals with diverse backgrounds are significantly impacted by environmental influences especially those whose lives are significantly affected by feelings of difference and discrimination. Career counseling should therefore be recognized as an aspect that incorporates the lives of individuals. An instance can be established in a case where a counselor encounters an individual is discriminated in a job as a result of a social bias against his race and color.
In addition to this author points out to the fact that human beings live within a social system and details the fact that researchers face limitations in viewing individuals as a system and a subsystem. Career counselors therefore need to determine some of the unique perspectives of different clients and the manner in which cultural factors influence their career-related needs (Arthur & McMahon's, 2005). Rather than considering each cultural unit as a separate entity, multicultural career counselors can benefit from the theoretical aspect that take consideration of the relations and interplay between different systems of cultural influence.
