Arts play a critical role in the education system. However, the education system has shifted focus of arts and glorified the role of non-art subjects despite the evidence on the importance of arts to the learner, education system and the economy. The No Child Left Behind initiative by former President Bush focused on ensuring children stayed in school and its goals are partly pegged on how arts subjects are taught. Researches have shown that parents are likely to come to school to see their children perform. Additionally, research has also show that the scope of arts subjects reaches beyond the subject itself. These among others are some of the advantages of arts in schools and the education system creates a void by emphasizing on academic skills at the expense of arts.
On the other hand, white collar jobs requiring non-art based subjects have experienced influx and have limited the chances of employment. The education system has discriminated against arts because they are less likely to land the students in white collar jobs. And this has created a challenge in the labor market which is understaffed in art based jobs. The trend has transcended to higher learning institutions where colleges and universities overlooked the importance of arts.
Arts are more likely to nurture talents which have a great ripple effect on the learner. If the talent is nurtured well, the child enjoys schooling and he/she is likely to improve in other subjects. Learners showing their talents build...
