Descartes' "Argument From Doubt"
In Descartes's “Argument from doubt,” he describes the process of establishing the dualism of mentality and physicality in two stages in the Meditations. In the second meditation, Descartes reflects on the things he believed in his life that were false and proves his existence to be a thinking factor (Rosemond and Rozemond 2). He goes ahead to prove the existence of the body and its distinction to the mind in the sixth meditation. Descartes concludes that the mind and body can exist without each other, and it is evident in his argument that there is hope for life after death. In efforts to clarify the distinction, he introduces the aspect of substance and claims that each of them has properties or attributes that cannot exist without it. He talks of ‘real distinction’ and describes it as a sign of separation between two substances. From the second meditation, Descartes concludes that the mind is a principal attribute and not a mode. He argues that as much as he could imagine not having a body and therefore not existing, it is impossible to think that there is no mind. Although he points out essential ideas in the second meditation, his arguments enough backing. For instance, his debate on real distinction highlights God’s divine capability and is based on his doctrine. He suggests that man could achieve a sense of realization by first doubting that his feelings or perceptions are real.
