 Equality of Opportunity in America
Question 1: Part I
The divide between the rich and the poor in America is openly evident. Robert Putman, in his book ‘Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis,’ uses his hometown, Port Clinton, to represent typical America (Putman, 2016). Putman uses Port Clinton to express issues revolving equality of wealth/income and opportunity. The factors and aspects have changed drastically over the years. America has been less concerned about equality of income and wealth and more concentrated on social mobility and equal opportunities.
Equality of income and wealth is generally the fair distribution of income and wealth between or within individuals or a population. Equality of opportunity is the idea of individuals being able to contest in equal relations, as mentioned in the political theory. Social mobility is mainly the movement of individuals’ social status from one status to another or generally through a system of the social ladder. Why does America believe more inequality of opportunity and social mobility?
Equality of opportunity is all about fairness in job positions, education, health care, and other sectors. The concept of providing chances to all, and extensive education or healthcare is a step to maximizing productivity or allocating resources in society. For this reason, equality for all results in upward mobility and achievement of personal skills, which is relative mobility. Relative mobility differs from absolute mobility, which focuses on measuring the changes in the living standards in the society. Putman’s thoughts and highlighted factors involved inequality of income prove that focusing on providing equal opportunities is parallel to the American dream.
(Putman, p. 44)Such aspects are better to be concerned with rather than analyzing the unjust cause that explains the wealth and income disparities in the society.
In conclusion, the aspect of equal opportunity has been criticized on whether it is a simple method to substantial disparities of income or how to approach property rights regarding employers, as they are entitled to employ whomever they feel qualified.
