Why People Are Poor
Each government usually has its own manifesto when coming to power. In the American setup, this has always been a common occurrence from the time it achieved independence to the present. Every president has always had a determination to leave office with a certain legacy. For President Johnson, there was a lot at stake, especially considering the ongoing mission in Vietnam and the fight against poverty back home. When it came to the fight against poverty, the president took a keen interest in not only the cause of tidbit also on the various systems and structures that needed to be put in place to combat poverty. The president’s understanding was that poverty is caused by the lack of equal opportunities to every American citizen, which would have otherwise given him or her, a chance at wealth creation and stability. He also asserts that setting up of programs and structures that would help boost the economy by providing this much-needed access to chance, is the best way forward. I agree with the president’s interpretation of the reasons for poverty and how to fight them, because the conceptualization of the problem and setup of such systems would provide a long-lasting solution to the poverty.
Johnson had a dream for a great society in which he viewed everyone as having an equal chance to opportunity to work themselves out of their predicaments. He says in his speech, that these opportunities or capacities, can be the key to a more robust society, if they are built effectively (Johnson).However, for such a great society to come into existence, there was much need for governmental intervention .The need for the government’s intervention was borne out of the need to have a more level playing groun...
