The article by Zinn follows the interesting account of black consciousness movements, the fight for the freedom of African Americans and the consequences of all these. The article clearly outlines the unfair treatment that blacks were exposed to, including being used as slaves in Southern America. They were denied many of their rights, which were otherwise given to all the whites. Overall in all the areas, the black people were considered inferior and therefore assumed to be suited only as slaves and not worthy of the other jobs and opportunities are given to the white people. All these injustices eventually led to the black revolt that saw many of the black people use various means, including literature, public speeches, and consciousness movements as ways of speaking against unfair treatment. Generally, the article is very enlightening about the history of blacks in the United States of America. The knowledge about this is significant since it helps to understand the origin of racism against the African Americans and the various ways they have been treated throughout history up until now.
Zinn’s article is an eye-opener in regards to how blacks were treated in America. For instance, it is quite evident that the rules and laws of the time were quite unfair towards the blacks who were always exposed to mistreatment. This was usually in the form of slavery and violence, especially where the black people tried to resist or speak against the injustices. For example, Zinn talks about the Mississippi murders which were rampant and which the national government refused to intervene in a bid “to defend blacks against violence,” (Zinn 448). Georgakas and Surkin (37) also note there, wherever there was any form of protest against the unfair treatment of workers in the USA, in most cases “the administrative punishments were directed primarily at blacks."
Moreover, most of the prisons in America at that time were filled majorly with the black population, which also point to the obvious discrimination and intolerance against African Americans. Black churches too were not spared since it is said that they were bombed in a determined effort to get rid of the African Americans. All the mentioned factors bring the realities of racism against blacks. By looking at the different cases, one cannot help but notice that this kind of treatment was the one that eventually pushed the black people into revolts to demand their rights.
