* The first goal of the Article Review is to introduce you to the topic of appeasement and its contribution to the outbreak of the Second World War. For decades, appeasement has been considered an erroneous and terrible policy utilized by Western powers towards Hitler's aggressive foreign policy. Each of the articles on the list provides a distinct perspective on appeasement, looking at its various dimensions and complexities. Your task will be to analyze an article for its perspective, content, evidence and style to determine a particular historian's perspective or interpretation.
* The second goal of the Article Review is to sharpen your abilities to summarize and synthesize information in a concise manner. The purpose of the article review is for you to identify the thesis and supporting arguments, along with provide a critique of these and/or the evidence used. You will not only have to identify all key components of the article-thesis, supporting arguments, evidence, and style-but summarize them in a succinct, clear and flowing manner. Your review must be about 500-600 words in length. Do not exceed the 500-600** word limit.
Your review should include:
1. Set the scene. Provide a context that will help the reader understand the main points of the article?
* This could include information on the author, text (e.g., audience, etc.), the historical events at that time and/or historiography (what position does the text take within the study of history).
2. Provide the author's thesis. Many writers do not state a clear thesis; therefore, you may have to figure it out yourself and state it in your own words. Sometimes, there may be three or four main points, not just one.
* What is the purpose in writing the article?
* What is the article's main contention or argument?
* What is the main point that the author is trying to get across to his/her audience?
 
3. What is the author's argument and what information/evidence and sources does he/she use to support that argument?

Abraham Ascher, a scholar, renowned author and professor of History is one of the few people who extensively examined the policy of appeasement and explored its contribution to the outbreak of the second world war. Although the policy was widespread and seemed pragmatic in the 1930s, various books and articles including Ascher’s expertly written and well-argued article “Was Hitler a Riddle?” have broadly discredited it as a weak policy (Ascher, 2009). In his article, Ascher’s main argument is that policymakers in London, Paris, and Washington should have had a clear picture of Hitler’s character and the course of action they should have taken because their diplomats in Germany had provided them with accurate reports based on their perceptions of Führer's personality and the Hitler’s regime as a whole (Ascher, 2009, p.4).
Ascher’s article has the primary purpose of examining the assessment reports and descriptions made by various British diplomats regarding the individual traits of Hitler with the aim of demonstrating that Germany was not only a military threat but also a challenge to key political, social and moral values. The article explains to the audience why significant assessments done by diplomats of the respective nations had little influence on the policymakers particularly those who pursued the appeasement policy (Hucker, 2016). To make his case, the author finds an intelligent way of informing his audience on the primary reasons why policymakers in the U.S, France and Britain ignored the reports of their diplomats and chose to satisfy the Nazi regime (Hucker, 2016, p.7).
