Exhibition Response Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Exhibition Response The American Folk Art Museum The most outsider piece in the American Folk Art Museum is John Dunkley’s, Three Spanish Jars. The art piece is created using mixed media on canvas. Dunkley’s piece displays a high level of imagery and creativity that is rarely seen in most artworks. His level of imagination is expressed in the painting’s dimensions and nature. Similarly, these characteristics also prove that the piece is the most outside. Dunkley’s failure to properly incorporate perspective in the painting is likely to mean that the artist did not have even the basic art training. As seen in the drawing, it is difficult to distinguish which objects are nearer than the other. While looking at the art piece, it would be difficult to establish the vantage point from which the artists used to indicate depth. Also, the objects poorly overlap one another, making it more difficult to identify which objects are closer to the others. This shows that Dunkley most likely taught himself how to draw instead of referencing other well-known artists. On the other hand, Paa Joe’s Cape Coast Castle is the least outsider. The piece is made up of wood and paint to create a magnificent structure. Similar to other well-known artists, Paa’s piece is inspired by his environment. In this case, the forts served as a way station for African slaves. Paa’s piece symbolizes the movement of people into a route of no return. The piece easily relates to its name as well, making it more distinguishable by admirers. The familiarity of the piece and its comparison with other wood sculptures makes it less outsider.
