Essay Instructions:

Final Project: Understanding History Through Art

In this project, you will select one artwork from the Metropolitan Museum collection and explain how it relates to a major theme in our course. To do this, you will research the object using a combination of reliable online sources along the lines we spoke about in class and scholarly publications. To succeed, you will have to put forward your own interpretation of how you think this artifact reflects the time and place in which it was made and themes in the course. Make sure you go beyond what you read and formulate your own original ideas. Be conscious of how sources you are reading present divergent viewpoints and explain these divergent viewpoints in your essay.
Met Collection: Ideally, to complete this project you would have to visit the Museum and choose an object but the entire Metropolitan Museum collection is listed and depicted on their website. To help yourself find objects you may want to consult the Museum’s timeline of art history, which explains major artistic trends over time using examples from the collection. You will likely want to cite that timeline as a source so definitely check it out. Here are links to the database of objects and the timeline:
https://www(dot)metmuseum(dot)org/toah/
https://www(dot)metmuseum(dot)org/art/collection

Bibliography: Cite all of your sources in MLA format and in a bibliography and remember to cite at least two academic articles. To find these you will probably have to read more than two because not all of the articles you come across will be relevant. We will discuss how to find such publications in class.

Writing: In writing your essay, make sure you define your subject— explain what it is and what its significance is today. Then proceed to offer a chronological or thematic account of its development that synthesizes your various sources. We will discuss these terms and concepts more in class.

Grading: You will be graded on how well you follow these instructions and the quality of your writing. I will run your assignments through plagiarism detectors and any plagiarized work will result in failing the entire course and, if I decide to report you to the administration, you may be expelled from SVA.

Submission:
PART I: In part one of this project, you will identify your subject of choice, explain in one paragraph what you plan to write about it, and present a bibliography of the sources you plan to use. Due April 19

PART II: Final essay submission. Essays should be at least 1000 to 1200 words and submitted in double-spaced format in 12 point font as a Microsoft Word Doc file. Due April 24

Part 2
Understanding History through Art
Salvator Mundi is a depiction of Christ, the savior of the world. It's a front face depiction of Christ holding a globe while the right hand is raised in a position to show blessings. The globe is symbolic of the earth. The art, therefore, is a representation of Christ's blessing to the world, which indicates the final destiny of humanity or the end of the earth. The art is dated between 1480 and 1485 and was created in one of the workshops of Han Memling. The art is a circular format of 27.3 centimeters with the painted surface occupying 20.3 cm (Metmuseum.Org). Due to its circular shape, it makes it appropriate and quite easy to be hanged above the bed. It's a formal presentation of the actual image of Christ that is created on a landscape that seems familiar. As a result, art creates a physical representation of a living being. Upon looking at it, the devotee develops a feeling of being blessed by the right hand while the left hand is holding a world representation that has a cross on top.
The appearance of Christ in this art is developed from his representation as he carried the cross to Calvary. The image was in a cloth that wiped his face as he labored with the cross to his crucifixion. The face was cleaned by a legendary saint referred to as Veronica. It’s also obtained from a manuscript describing a procession in Rome. The parade was described by a monk of the Abbey of Saint Albans by the name Matthew Paris. The document describes Christ's hair, and the nature of his face, which is smooth, has no blemishes and with a short beard. From the two instances, Han Memling established christ’s appearance as having a passive expression in a shoulder-length view of the figure represented in a frame like a portrait(Metmuseum.Org). The structure was supported by a single plank of oak that was aligned horizontally. The panel was prepared with a white ground and also had an underdrawing that appears to be of a medium liquid pen.
