Summary
Disasters have always been tied to socio-economic and ecological conditions that are present in the society and the environment. These factors affect, not only how the community builds resiliency through sound crisis management strategies, but also how they shape their overall territory as a preventive response against these dangers. In this article, a critical summary of the different literature discussing about resilience and proactive response would be done. All in all, the author believes that by understanding how the disasters and the socio-economic systems are tied together, a proactive measure against disasters could be achieved thereby lessening the overall impact of a disasters to the society affected.
On the one hand, it could be said that current socio-economic and ecological conditions affect the amount of damage that natural disasters inflict upon the society. In the article written by Zimmer, she discussed how factors such as the rising sea-levels and urbanization have led to increased the harshedness of the effects of natural disasters to the people. Thus, those places who have undergone ‘urbanization’ or ‘gentrification’ without adquate plan and response procedures against the effects of natural calamities have experienced stronger repercussions such as higher floods, severe property damages, and more property losses, among others.
