Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark is a masterpiece by Steven Spielberg. This movie uses different cinematography techniques in order to bring the audience in awe. Through the various camera angling, meticulous prop settings, and wonderful use of music and sound effects, the viewers are immersed in the story’s universe. One particular scene that I found particularly interesting is the “Sword vs Gun” scene where in Indiana Jones battles a gang of goons. The techniques used in this scene were a mix of camera angling, panning, close ups, and wonderful editing. The scene also intelligently utilizes sound and music to create suspense and excitement for the viewers. The close ups were particularly helpful in giving the facial expression of the characters involved. The use of different shots, short, long, and medium are intricately connected in order to bring out the best presentation of the setting and the intensity of the situation. Most camera angling for this scene used medium shot in order to provide viewers the opportunity to feel the emotion of the characters, portraying action, and integrating it with their expression and imply the countenance of each one. The production team spared no expense on the extras, giving them roles and directing them to act as crowds to fully present the bustling streets of this certain foreign land where the protagonist emerges victorious.
Part 2The films of Hollywood were vastly different from the films from other countries in mainly because Hollywood was producing movies for the global audience. During this time period, emerging technologies paved the way for more advanced cinematography through the use of better cameras, and better editing. Hollywood was at the forefront of creating blockbusters which captured the attention and interests of the global audiences. A great example of the dominance of Hollywood was Star Wars. This movie utilized better film techniques and capitalized on the technologies, granted that Hollywood had a larger budget for cinematography and acquisition of great actors, and props and sets. In contrast to these, other countries were mainly creating movies for local screening. Because Hollywood had such big budgets, they could distribute and market their movies to a bigger audience.
