Mary Leakey has contributed immensely in helping students of history understand the human evolution. Her research began at the University of London in England before moving to Tanzania with her husband Louis Leakey. The Ol Duvai Gorge in Tanzania formed a foundation of excavations that the couple carried out.
One of the major discoveries by Mary Leakey was in Rusinga Island where she found jaws and skull of what seemed like an ape. This creature was named Proconsul Africanus and it was the first ever to be found (Leakey, p. 38). This gave way to more discoveries which indicated that the ancient humans looked liked apes. From Mary's discoveries, evolution was evident so that the ape-like creatures evolved to become the present day human beings. The discovery by Mary Leakey helped to give more sense to the evolution theory.
