The topics in renaissance art are imbued with story, artistry, and history. Political and Religious figures in Renaissance Paintings are always created grandly and skillfully through the use of color, perspective, and depth. The details of the artwork create a perfect context to the main subject of the painting. This can be see in the painting Benozzo Gozzoli, Journey of the Magi, 1459–62. The central character is shown to be adored and followed by the people. In history, the pope had authority to encourage wars and conquest in which heroes would create more territories for their faith. During this time, secularism created opportunity for growth of education and science. For the people, quests were a symbol of the growth of society and the advancements of their culture. In the painting, the magi is considered as a spiritual leader who will bring enlightenment to the world.
The School of Athens
Another important painting during that depicts political figures is the “School of Athens”, made by Raphael between 1509 and 1511. It is a very detailed painting which highlights the expansion of consciousness of society through the greatest minds of their time. It gathers memorable philosophers, mathematicians, and scientists of their history into one image. It creates a value of learning and joy in curiosity. The painting portrays the political figures in a state of enjoyment as they trade ideas and lessons from each other.
