Stela 14 – Piedras Negras – Guatemala
Before discussing the artifact, a short history of the Piedras Negras will be talked about to give an idea of where it all started. It was in the 1960s when there were archeologically recorded monuments that got stolen from the Maya Site in Guatemala located at the Peten region. After that, the artifacts were transported to the United States.
During the early part of the 1960w, there were looters coming from Tenosique de Pino Suarez just from across the border of Mexico, and they descended to Piedras Negras. The architectural elements were cut into pieces, transported across the border up to Tenosique, before being sold to private collections in the United States, Europe, and Mexico. The Stela stubs, together with other damaged remains from the looting were seen at the site.
There were 40 limestone monuments and Stela 14 was one of them; showing a ruler on a dais with a ladder to reach it. The ruler is wearing a headdress, heavy jade necklace, wristlets, and he has a bag with incense inside. The name of the ruler was Yo’nal Ahk, which can be seen on his headdress. The inscription found on the left side has 758 BCE written on it to indicate the time when he ruled. There is a woman standing on one side of the ladder with a bundle of feathers in her hand, which shows that she is probably his mother. Her name is not readable anymore, which is written on the monument’s left side. It got eroded through time.
