The Third Punic wars and its impact on Rome
In the Second Punic War (218 BC-202BC), Hannibal a Carthaginian attacked Rome, while the Romans started the Third Punic war (149 B.C – 146 B.C) to wipe out Carthage (Polybius). Even though, Rome had defeated the Carthage in the previous wars, some military members and leaders sought to further weaken Carthage based on fears that it would attack Rome again. A truce agreement between the two was broken when Carthage invaded a neighboring state, and the Romans retaliated by sending troops to Carthage and the Third and final Punic War started (Livius). Rome was finally able to win after Scipio a young general attacked the harbor locations. This paper looks into economic, social and political changes in Rome after the third Punic War.
The Third Punic war unraveled as the Carthaginians were given n ultimatum to reduce the size of their army and they would be offered protection (Polybius). According to Polybius as reported by Baronowski (17), Romans already had motives to invade Carthage, but had to look for an opportunity. Carthaginians were faced with the challenge of either avoiding war with the Romans or avoid war and suffer the indignity of having no independence. A complete surrender that the Carthaginian had to give up claim to the territories, cities and all people who lived in these area (Polybius). Scipio led an army that complexly destroyed the city of Carthage, while this also caused resentment among the Carthaginian worried that the Romans would be perverted by power (Polybius).
