Government bureaucracies have always been easy targets for those with political aspirations. The following article was written in 1983 as the move to reign in government bureaucracy was in its early stages under Reagan. Despite considerable coverage to the contrary, the authors claim that “that public bureaucracy in the United States is more valuable and effective than recognized” (149).

The public requires a government that will help in accomplishing the desired social and economic goals. Bureaucracy is a government that is not elected by the people and has been established to achieve specific set goals. The bureaucracy governments provide an increased performance of society by dealing with complex issues facing the public. The wastage of resources can be reduced by using a bureaucratic government with the best plans for the community. According to Milward and Rainey, public bureaucracy assists the public sector to operate in high standards (149). However, people with political aspirations focus on developing a negative for the public bureaucracy. Government bureaucracies are easy targets by people with political aspirations to make the public view the bureaucracies as oppressive. The political aspirants view that the elected leaders in the public sector will perform better than the bureaucratic leaders that are not elected. However, the government bureaucracies assist in the proper management of public resources to help in accomplishing specific goals.
The accurate judgment about efficiency and waste in bureaucracies is difficult due to the way political aspirants portray bureaucracy. Public bureaucracy is based on kinship or charismatic authority of the leaders. The elected government is wasteful hence the need to identify the bureaucratic rule that will help in dealing with the complex issues in the community. There has been an increased doubt about the efficiency and performance of public bureaucracy in the US (Milward and Rainey 149). The highest authority focuses on reducing the effectiveness of bureaucratic governments through negative opinions. The public sector requires a connection that will help the organizations compete with the private sector.
