In “Report on the National and Colonial Questions at the Fifth Congress of the Communist International,” Ho Chi Minh, a Vietnamese anti-colonial nationalist gave a speech outlining his thoughts on anti-colonialism, communism and imperialism. The speech was made in 1924 after WWI where European colonial powers still ruled parts of Asia and Africa. Despite communist and left wing people in Europe holding similar views with anti-colonialists, their efforts were seen as being ineffectual. The fifth congress of the communist international (Comintern) was also held to bring together leadership of communist organizations. The speech was intended for communist attending the congress to work together, urging them to support national and colonial independence.
Minh argued that the colonial system had affected the revolution system in Vietnam, because there was interdependence with the capitalist world. He goes on criticizing the French and British communist parties, which failed to support progressive agendas and policies for the colonized people (Minh 2). The speaker mentioned comrades Lenin and Stalin, indicating that communism was taking the root in the early 20th century, and there was a need to forge ties between progressives and anti-colonial forces. Minh was preoccupied with the French colonialists leaving Vietnam and other countries under occupation. Minh envisioned that a proletariat revolution would inspire socialistic world and that would overthrow capitalism.
The information in Minh’s speech reflects the growing concerns that anti-colonial sentiments and activities had not achieved the intended results.
