Film Reflection 4: Stonewall Uprising
I firmly believe that individuals should have the right and freedom to express themselves regardless of their gender or sexuality. Particularly, I support the needs for persons of the LGBTQ community to be recognized as equals in society and not to be discriminated or subjected to harsh and inhumane treatment. With that said, I had heard of the Stonewall Inn and the riots before and I am of the opinion that they were instigated from the fact that the gay community had been pushed too far back against the wall and the only way out or forward was to lash out and fight for their rights.
The Stonewall Uprising as seen in the video happened during a tumultuous period in the United States. The country was characterized by civil unrests with members of minority groups standing up to be counted and fighting for their place in society. For one, women were up and about championing for gender equality. While persons of the LGBTQ community had been around for ages, they had learnt to conduct their affairs in secrecy. It was and in some quarters currently considered immoral and illegal to engage in sexual intercourse with persons of the same gender/sex.
During the period that preceded the Stonewall Uprising, individuals who were associated with homosexuality were brutally beaten and in some cases even killed. There were some who were arrested and convicted for being in homosexual relationships. As such, many homosexuals found solace hiding themselves in places such as the Stonewall Inn where they were allowed to freely express themselves. I believe and know that homosexuals are ordinary people with feelings and emotions. In that regard, they also fall in love and have the desire to be with the people they harbor affections for without any reservations or controls.
I remember when I was young and my parents restricted me from being in a relationship. Although I respected my parents, my heart had grown fond of someone in the neighborhood. As such, we were forced to sneak around. We could not hold hands as other couples let alone sit cozily in a restaurant and enjoy a meal...
