Active listening enables a coach to develop a positive and healthy relationship with the client. The coach needs to listen with more than just the ears applying other skills, such as noticing the nonverbal cues and exploiting open-ended questions. Active listening is complete when there is a successful provision of feedback that the listener hears and understands the speaker. The questions require more information than the yes/no answer and encourage the client because of their non-threating nature. Most coaches incorporate proper questioning in coaching to improve communication between them and the client. The essay seeks to create a dialogue between a suicidal client and a coach who uses open-ended questions as part of active listening, to determine the patients' needs.
Dialogue
Coach: Can you tell me more about the suicidal thoughts you harbor?
Client: Most of the time, I feel sad for no reason and feel like my life has no meaning. Ending my life is the only way to stop the misery.
Coach: You mentioned sadness. Can you say more about that?
Client: At times, I feel like no one loves me because I am a failure. I would tell you more, but I do not think you will understand.
Coach: At times means not always. When do you least experience the thoughts?
