The Balkans is used to refer to the southeast Europe geographical region. It is commonly known as the Balkan Peninsula. It incorporates several nations including Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania. The United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR ) was sent to Croatia to bring back peace and stability in the Balkan region in April 1992. UNPROFOR was to work on an interim term of 12 months helping the local police to demilitarize the residents (Glenny, 1996). It was to work under the supervision of the United Nations. The Balkan region has become a center of interest to the international community. European Union, Russia, Turkey, China, and the United States all show interest in bringing peace into the region. The countries had come to an economic unity, however, this broke after the Balkan war of the 1990s (Menhinick, 2003). This report is aimed at examining the condition within the Balkan region and the critical role that was played by the Maritime authority.
Understanding the Conflict in the Balkans
There had been instability in the Balkans region for several decades. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the fight continued up to October 1995. UNPROFOR which camped in Croatia in 1992 began peace negotiations in the country intending to bring back stability in the region. A peace agreement was signed in Paris, France (Berdal, 2001). The three Balkan states were to give respect for one another and treat each state as a sovereign state. Maritime Infrastructure in Balkans Montenegro, Albania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina are the Balkan countries that have access to the sea. These states have a coastal strip of 20 kilometers. The region's main port is Montenegro Bar. There is a ferry route that links the country to the Italian harbors (Menhinick, 2003). Regular ferries from Italy serve the region. Bosnia's port of Neum is used to serve local purposes but not international interest.
Maritime Power Role in Ending the Balkan war
The Maritime authority played a major role to end the Balkan war. It took the following measures. Firstly, it sponsored with Russia and European Union individuals and UN Security Council goals censuring any episode of huge scope viciousness in the Balkans, naming and authorizing parties that have added to it, slicing off help to any attacker, and forcing a prompt suspension of threats (Menhinick, 2003). Secondly, to brought to an end the fight between Bosnia and Herzegovina, it gathered with EU individuals and Russia a crisis meeting of the Peace Implementation Council—the body that regulates the Dayton understanding—to approve activity by the high delegate, who despite everything has forced to square or direct enactment and fire authorities (Glenny, 1996). Thirdly, it also revealed the autonomy or any such one-sided exertion at the parcel, decline acknowledgment, retain help, and clarify that IMF and World Bank help will likewise be obstructed, in collaboration with the European Union (Pearl, 1992).
