During the height of colonial expansion and administration, European powers had control over almost every part of the world. Asia, with all its vast richness and elaborate trade system, was not left behind either. Shanghai is the biggest city in China, and it serves as a global business hub. Shanghai started as one of the treaty ports in East Asia during the colonial era. It was usually referred to as The Shanghai Bund (Taylor). The Shanghai treaty port bund supported the colonial power agenda.
The Shanghai Bund proved to be a commercial hub and military base for the colonial powers during the colonial era. The Shanghai bund provided access to trade because it had a large influx of sea traffic, fueling foreign exchange in the region. Foreign companies wanted to establish their firms because of the rise in the opium trade (Taylor 135). It gave them a chance to exploit the locals. The Shanghai Bund also provided a base where foreign powers could settle their navies. Colonial naval forces usually used the bund to showcase their strength (Taylor 137). It was a way to show the locals who were in charge of the bund.

The treaty port bund provided a rich ground for trade and other activities due to its high sea traffic influx.
