Article Reviews

During the semester you will complete three article reviews.

I have provided a list of articles you may choose from for each week of the semester. The articles relate to the topic we are discussing in class that week.

You will see three drop-boxes in this module on our class page. Each has a deadline date.

There are about four weeks between each deadline. During that period, you must complete one article review. You choose the week that works best for your interests and schedule.

Each of you will review your article in class. I will prompt you with a few questions to help you get started.

The following directions provide you with an idea of what your reviews should include.

ALL ARTICLES ARE FOUND IN YOUR LIBRARY DATABASE PROGRAM – THEY ARE ON JSTOR

An article review is not simply a recitation of what you read. Look over the following ideas.

  1. First paragraph or two deal with author’s thesis and argument. Present only pertinent evidence.
  2. Design a Paragraph tying the article to class. How does it further knowledge, dispute, or support what we learned in class?
  3. Discuss types of sources used. Primary. Secondary, or both….do they support the thesis?
  4. Does the author present both sides of the argument? If no argument is made, does the author provide a full and varied explanation of the event or person’s motivations?
  5. What did you think of the article?

Smith, David G. On the Edge of Freedom: The Fugitive Slave Issue in South Central Pennsylvania, 1820-1870: The Fugitive Slave Issue in South Central Pennsylvania, 1820-1870. Fordham Univ Press, 2013.
Regarding controversy and Christian, the author points out that the beginning of 1850 marked Pennsylvania's new era. The ear was based on the engagement of Pennsylvania with the fugitive slave issue. The fugitive slave act of 1850 gave the federal government more power. Besides, the fugitive issue turned out to be a conflict because the northerners were torn between helping slaves or the slaveholders. The increased conflict resulted in the fugitive topic being moved to the press (Smith 125). The newspapers became common sources of examining the issue and getting responses from the masses. The changes resulted in most of the fugitive cases being handled locally. The Christiana riot remained to be of importance in the history of the Pennsylvanian fugitive slaves. Besides, the 1850 compromise played a role in nationalizing the slave issue. A slave case that used to attract a little attention from people in nearby counties could now be put in the newspapers. As a result, the case would attract the attention of the whole country. A number of the newspapers were politically subsidized for them to provide political cover to certain parties. The author argues that the Star and Republican Banner was one of the antislavery newspapers existing in that era. Besides, politicians such as Cooper had identified themselves with the antislavery movement.
