History
The arguments Richard Hakluyt used to try to persuade Queen Elizabeth I to expand English colonization of the Americas were mostly founded on the emergence of adverse social and economic changes that brought mounting internal social unrest. Even though England was jealous of the enormous wealth gleaned by Spain from colonizing the New World, the prospect of entering into the race was spurred by a growing population, skyrocketing land costs, and an expanding population of jobless and landless peasants (Stanford University Press). Despite the obvious economic gains of English colonization, many proponents veiled their economic interests by touting the need to spread the gospel among the New World’s pagan peoples. Hakluyt drew upon the mythical narrative of King Arthur’s subjugation and Christianization of heathen lands by the 12th-century friar, Geoffrey of Monmouth, to rationalize an American conquest.
