Don’t just cite Andrade’s conclusion about this. Give some relevant details from his descriptions of battles and assess the strength of his argument. 2) What similarities are there in the Ming society that Ch’oe Pu describes in his report on his 1480s experiences and in Andrade’s descriptions of the Ming in the 1630s? Written by Tonio Andrade, “Lost Colony: The untold story of China’s first victory over the West” is a book that gives an insight on China’s victory over the Dutch. The Dutch wanted to expand their reach to Chinese and Japanese trade routes and therefore they established a fortified port in Taiwan in 1624. In 1662, they lost this port to the famous pirate and Ming loyalist Koxinga. This was this was the first major victory the Chinese had won over the West despite the notion that the West had a superior military. This paper will seek to address whether the Dutch had a military advantage over their Asians.
The Chinese feared the superiority of the Dutch naval vessels. They had large ships that were easy to maneuver and were heavily armed (Andrade, 2011). The Dutch also employed more effective cannonading than the Chinese. From this, it is clear that the Dutch had an advantage over the Chinese when it comes to naval vessels. The Chinese had their own ships but they were not as large as the Dutch’s and they were not as armed as the Dutch ships. With such superior naval vessels, the Dutch clearly were expected to have an upper hand when it comes to sea encounters. This is a clear indication that the Dutch military had an advantage over the Chinese military.
